The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) was established under Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 which consolidates numerous functions & orders which have hitherto handled food-related problems in a variety of Ministries and Departments. FSSAI has been produced for setting down science-based criteria for content of food and also to control their manufacture, storage, supply, sale, and export to guarantee access to safe and healthy food for human consumption.

The Act also aims to set a single reference point for all things regarding food standards and safety, by proceeding from multicolored, multi-departmental management to one line of control. For this effect, the Act establishes an independent statutory authority -- both the Food Safety and Standard Authority of India with head office in Delhi. Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) along with the State Food Safety Authorities shall apply various provisions of this Act.
Establishment of the Authority: Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India is the Administrative Ministry for the execution of FSSAI. The Chairperson and Chief Executive Officer of Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) have been appointed by the Government of India. The Chairperson is at the position of Secretary to Government of India.
